Well written, and authentic. People seemed to get through some tough scrapes in those days, without much complaining. A very good window on life on the frontier from a man who lived it.

Read this book if you just want a fun “boys book” read. Don’t expect real character development or plot depth. The author fills in his lack of knowledge about the western expansion days of the United States with colloquial pictures he probably read in someone else’s dime novels. It is just very difficult to translate American experience into British story telling. The eventual, prevailing hero is a Brit who shows those dumb Irish-Americans how to survive, time after time.
