Griffin Technology Survivor for iPad Mini, Black/Black (GB35918)

Ridiculously over-engineered? Or the perfect case for your iPad no matter where you’re headed? We think it’s a little bit of both. Simply put, the Griffin Survivor Case is the most protective case we’ve ever built. Designed and tested to meet or exceed US Department of Defense Standard 810F, Griffin’s Survivor Extreme-Duty Case is designed from the inside out to protect your iPad from extreme conditions dirt, sand, rain, shock, vibration, and a host of other environmental factors. Survivor is built on a shatter-resistant polycarbonate frame clad in rugged, shock absorbing silicone. A built-in screen protector seals your Multi-Touch display from the outside environment, while hinged plugs seal the dock connector, headphone port, hold switch, camera, and volume controls. Survivor is independently tested to meet or exceed environmental testing standards for blown rain, blown dust and grit, vibration, shock, temperature and humidity.

Well engineered, a good value This is a strong, solid case for my iPad mini. I particularly like the way the ports are protected with substantial but flexible covers. All the parts fit very snugly. The product is quite protective of the iPad and I have no concerns about traveling with it everywhere. It was hard to assemble the Survivor’s screen cover onto the rest of the case, until I figured out the solution. The cover has tabs that fit into slots and tightly grip the case. I discovered that by using a fingernail to very slightly and temporarily bend the tabs open, they snap into place perfectly. My Survivor came with a small card that illustrated how to assemble the case. The illustrations are small; there is almost no verbal instruction, it has no pointer to helpful web resources, and the card could not easily be used because it was obscured by another card filled with legalese. Both were stuck inside the case, visible through the screen cover, but the user has to open the case to retrieve them. And it’s not clear how to open the case.I complained about this to Griffin and they pointed me to an instructional video. It is required viewing. But user testing should have revealed the inadequacy of the small printed card. Even getting the case out of its oddly shaped and tightly assembled cardboard box and plastic insert was harder than it should have been. Please, more usability testing!Apple has officially stated that the iPad mini screen has a special coating that wears off with usage. The Survivor screen cover probably reduces or prevents such wear. I found no reduction in screen responsiveness from using the screen cover.Clean hands and a cleaning cloth are necessary when assembling the screen, as shown in the Griffin video. But once the entire assembly was complete, I was very satisfied.

Great Case and Superior Customer Service from Griffin I ordered this for my new iPad mini. It was easy to put on and provides great protection for the device. I was disappointed in the screen protector part, however, since it had small “rainbow” spots on it in various areas and scratched very easily. I had been careful not to wipe it with anything abrasive but there were scratches on it within the first week of use. The rainbow spots were very distracting as well. I contacted Griffin via their email contact form on their website, to find out if I could replace just the screen protector portion of the case. To my surprise, I received a reply back within a day apologizing and saying that I must have received a defective unit. The said they would send me out an entire new case and that I didn’t need to send the old one back. I replied back with their requested information ( a couple of pictures of the problem) and heard back within the hour! As promised, they’ve sent me the new case and this screen protector does not have the rainbow spots and so far hasn’t scratched at all. It even feels more sturdy than the one that came with the first case. I am totally impressed with Griffin’s customer service. It is no doubt, the best I’ve seen for an Internet purchase, in a really long time! Highly recommend this case and Griffin as a company. I will definitely look at their products first in the future.
